A Complete Guide to Becoming an Esthetician in Florida

One question we get asked almost more than any other is “what are the exact steps or process one must go through to become a licensed esthetician in the State of Florida?” Here’s our guide on the process, including what our facility offers. As a state-licensed esthetician school, we’ve helped many students graduate and attain their Esthetician Licenses in the state of Florida.

To become an esthetician in the state of Florida, you need to complete the following steps:

  • Meet the Minimum Requirements: You must be at least 16 years of age and have a high school diploma or equivalent (GED) to be eligible for an esthetician license in Florida.

  • Attend an Approved Esthetician Program: You must complete at least 220 hours of esthetician training at a Florida-approved school or program. You can find a list of approved programs on the Florida Board of Cosmetology's website.

This one is important - you MUST work with an established, esthetician school in order to attain your own license. Some things to keep in mind or watch out for when it comes to this include cost, class-size, founder and instructor experience, job placement rates after the course. Other things that have popped up recently include (unfortunately) fraud. There are some programs out there rubber-stamping licenses and simply assisting students with paid license. This isn’t just illegal - but potentially extremely dangerous for this profession (we’re working with people’s skin after all!). So be diligent when doing your research on the esthetician or beauty school you’re considering!

  • Apply for Your License: Once you pass your institutions final exams, along with your hours, you can apply for your esthetician license. You will need to submit an application, pay the licensing fee, and provide proof of your training and exam scores.

  • Renew Your License: Esthetician licenses in Florida must be renewed every two years. To renew your license, you must complete 10 hours of continuing education and pay the renewal fee.

It's essential to note that estheticians in Florida are regulated by the Florida Board of Cosmetology. They ensure that estheticians meet the required educational standards and maintain proper licensing and certification.
